Our group made 50 of these as a 'give-away' at our quilter's retreat last year, but we filled each with 2-1/2" strips cut in half lengthwise and rolled together like a jelly roll.

What is the best stuffing to used? I know their is something to used to sharpen pins.

Great question. If you want to sharpen pins, add steel wool. Keep in mind, it will rust. The red tomato pin cushions have emery sand in the strawberry. Here's a post about it: http://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/2012/09/my-little-pin-village.html
