The cake had to stand for 3 months as part of a museum display, so it was created out of Styrofoam. It was then covered in fondant. Many of the details were created using silicone molds, others were cut with small cookie cutters.
What was your inspiration?
I was working with an interior designer and photographer for a museum display in Atlanta. The idea centered around a baroque chaise lounge and chair and some black and white photos. We all agreed that "Marie Antoinette Meets Modern Day Drama" would be perfect for our theme. I wanted to create a "ballgown" cake, without making it too literal. I love making shoe cakes, so the pillow and slippers was a labor of love. We knew we wanted some smaller cakes to carry the theme throughout the vignette, so when I found the candelabras, I knew they would make perfect mini cake stands.
What are you most proud of?
I had never used silicone molds before. I saw them used on Craftsy.com and thought - those are cool! They really helped me pull the "lace" and "jewel" look of this cake off. I also love how much each cake compliments the other, they really tell a story!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Be patient, these cakes took 2 weeks to create (design time not included). Start with the mini cakes and move your way up.
