Instructions

While I chose to knit the sample in worsted weight yarn, the Mapes pattern is a set of simple to knit, comforting wraps. Included in this pattern are the instructions for a simple stockinette/garter version, the sample shown in the photographs, and variations for self design.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make a casual, easy to knit and wear shawl in this fun winged crescent shape. Something can be both utilitarian and beautiful, and I wanted to create something that is both.

What are you most proud of?

My Mother (the lady in the picture) doesn't wear shawls but agreed to be my model. After seeing the pictures she said "I didn't know it looked that good. I might actually start wearing shawls - if they look like that one." She was particularly taken with the shot of her wearing Mapes "Bandit" style (with a struggling 5 yr old on her lap).

If I can convert her to shawls - then that would be quite an accomplishment in my mind.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Chose a yarn you love - because this shawl is about the yarn more than anything else.
