Makena's Baby Quilt

Quilting

All Done for Christmas
Finished except for binding
Quilting
Granma Michelle, Mommy and Makena
Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Infant/Baby

Style: Mod, Cute

Materials

I did not sew this, her grandmother did, I only quilted it.

What was your inspiration?

Shortly before Christmas, I talked our Hygienist into making her very first quilt. She borrowed a template from me, I gave her some brief instructions and she was off! She came back with the top finished, some batting and backing and said...now what? So I offered to quilt it for her. I have a little set up that I use with my "short arm" and it works just great for small quilts that don't required great detail.

What are you most proud of?

I used a platinum cotton thread and echoed the large floral motif through out the quilt. The thread blended beautifully in all the blocks and stood out on the dark purple which helped the dark purple blend with the rest of the fabrics.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just have fun!

sorry Sue, don't know why it makes so many copies of my response. I just use my regular machine to quilt with on this system. The draw back is that you can only quilt the width of your machines bed. And as you take up the fabric, depending on the thickness of what you are quilting, that quilting width will shorten, so you want to select a quilting pattern that will be able to be used in that space, a meander, a small wave, that type of thing. If you are wanting to do lovely feathers, etc...you either need to invest in a long arm or juggle your quilt free motion under your own machine. But this will give you that 360 free motion delight in a small space. I set my rail tracks up on a table and leave them set up so they are ready to go when I am. Then I just put on the arms and the take up rods and I am pretty much ready to quilt. It's been very enjoyable and worth the $500. I spent on it. I have more than quilted back my investment.

Nice job! What frame are you using with your machine? My sister wants to get one. Thanks.

Sue, I am using a Handi Quilter Frame that I purchased many years ago, it's great for small quilts. I don't know if they still sell them, sometimes you can pick them up used. Here is a link to my Flickr site, which shows how it is set up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/14008698@N00/5986775130/

Thanks Terry...it's funny, they are not my family, but a co-worker...and although we are not related, mommy and baby have our same last name! Maybe back up the tree a bit.

Beautiful quilt - what did you use for the quilting design, is it a stippling?

Thank you, what I did was replicate that large floral you see in the gray fabric, I did kind of a sea wave and then petals around it, it worked very well and gave a lacy effect on the dark purple bits, while blending into the rest of the quilt.

I was so excited for her to get going on this! The most rewarding part for me was to see her just beaming because she had created it and then to see them all together in the photo. It's her first grandchild and she must have sewn up about 50 baby dresses...so cute.
