Make a Beanie Hat from a Knit Sweater

Instructions

Supplies:
1 old knit sweater
Pom-pom

Step 1: Measure and mark 12” (30 cm) from the hem of the sweater. Cut this piece off.
Step 2: Serge the raw edges.
Step 3: Gather the top edge (opposite of the rib) until the opening is closed up.
Step 4: Using the hand sewing needle to stitch around the edge opposite of the rib for reinforcement.

how wide a piece do you use from a sweater? depends on size of head of eventual wearer, I guess, but for a toddler's hat?

Just like for an adult, the size of the piece will all depend on the size of the child's head.
