How did you get it down to this size? This is what I want to do, I would like to make this for my son, but I'm not quite sure where to start.

The class is great! I made this for my 3 year old daughter, so sized it down for her. Just swatched with a smaller needle (#3 for the body, #2 for the ribbing) and measured the length of the repeat (for the longest repeat) and cast on stitches to correspond with the # of repeats needed to get close to the size I wanted. I just measured it agent her as I went along to determine when to start the arm holes and v neck. And I did fewer shaping rows . It will still be a little big but that means she can wear it longer.
