STEP 1: Cut the sleeves and collar off the dress shirt. STEP 2: Cut straight across the top of the shirt, 3″ (7.6 cm) above the pockets. STEP 3: Sew up the armhole (becomes the skirt side seam). STEP 4: Finish the top raw edge of the shirt. You can serge or use a zig-zag stitch. STEP 5: Fold down 1″ (2.5 cm) from the top and press to make a crease. STEP 6: Edge stitch near finished edge to make a casing for the elastic. STEP 7: Leave a small opening to insert the elastic. STEP 8: Insert elastic with a safety pin. STEP 9: Once elastic is pulled through, stitch the ends of the elastic together. STEP 10: Stitch up the opening. STEP 11: Use the sleeves to make a belt for the skirt by evening out the curves of each sleeve until you have straight, even edges. The width of the belt is your choice. STEP 12: Leave the cuffs on (optional) for style. STEP 13: With right sides together, sew the long edges of both sleeves. Then, sew sleeves together until you have one long piece (belt). STEP 15: Stitch cuffs down to be the edges of your belt. STEP 16: Use leftover fabric to make belt loops by cutting 4 small pieces which are 1″ (2.5 cm) longer than the width of the belt.
