Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Classic, Romantic

Materials

Three Luna Notte charm packs from MODA, quilter's cotton flannel, Warm and Natural batting, mercerized cotton quilting thread

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to create a rag quilt from high quality materials with a Victorian type feel instead of the normal nursery colors and characters. When my three Luna Notte charm packs arrived I knew I had to use them for this project.

What are you most proud of?

This is the first rag quilt I made. Everyone who saw it in person just fell in love with it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Rag quilts are one of the easier quilts for beginners and are more forgiving if you don't get your seams matched up perfectly. Charm packs make a really good alternative to cutting all those squares for the front and are the perfect size for baby quilts. Just jump in there and create beautiful things for your friends and family.

very pretty!!!! I've made several baby rag quilts but it did my machine in...I can't sew thick fabrics with it anymore (skips stitches) :( I guess I need an older heavy duty one...lately I've stuck to thinner quilts

That is wonderful. Good luck to you, but I'm sure you will do just fine. I highly encourage you to invest in a pair of spring loaded scissors to cut the seams with. It will save you time, sore hands, and possible mistakes.

Good luck! I have fun making them myself. Do get those spring loaded scissors. You'll be glad you did! I'd suggest washing the quilt at the laundromat so you don't have all the lint in your home laundry.

Hi, I love your quilt but being a beginner and a foreigner I am not quite sure what rag quilt describes. The picture does not help much but I would love to know what is in between the square blocks which runs all the way down and across the blocks. Looks very fine work altogether. Thank you for sharing.

From what I have seen of the rag quilts 3 layers of flannel was used. Each square is a block made of a flannel back, a flannel between and a flannel for the front. The ones I have seen were cut with zig zag cutters. Then an X was stiched in each square. After all the square are sewn together with all the seams facing the front you then fringe all the seams. Hope this helps.

This quilt was made with Luna Notte from Moda cotton 5" squares on front, 3-1/2" squares of Warm and Natural batting in the middle, and 5" squares of quilter's flannel on the back. Sandwiches are made by sewing the three layers together diagonally from corner to corner making an x through each. Each sandwich is sewn backsides (flannel side) together with a 1/2" seam. After the entire quilt is sewn together then you cut the seams and when you wash the quilt that creates what you see between the squares. There is a more complete tutorial with pictures at my website. http://sfquilts.com/tutorialragquilt.htm

I love these quilts. Have made many for baby quilts. The last one I used the same pattern for the edges of the quilt. Gave it a different perspective.. It would be great to use the charm packs...already cut and ready to go.. :) Your quilt turned out beautifully!!

This is a very straightforward quilt to make. I used three MODA 5" charm packs from the Luna Notte collection. for the front. You won't need all of the 5" squares. The middle is 3-1/2" squares of Warm and Natural batting. The back is 5" squares of a very soft quilter's flannel. There is a rag quilt tutorial on my website at http://sfquilts.com/tutorialragquilt.htm. I just laid the squares out row by row before I sewed to make sure that I didn't have the same color or pattern touching.

Congratulations for a very beautiful rag quilt! so I could use cotton for a rag quilt? I thought it doesn't fray as much as flannel. What did you use for the backing? quilters cotton flannel? I never heard of it before until now :)

Thanks Caroline. I love the cotton (especially MODA) on front, Warm and Natural batting in the middle, and quilter's cotton flannel on the back. The cotton alone does not look good, but with the flannel adding the fullness it's perfect.
