This is my own design for a St. Patrick's Day table runner. Materials needed: 1/2 yard background fabric (1 yard if using the same fabric for backing) 3/8 yard design fabric 1/2 yard backing fabric (eliminate if using background fabric for backing) 1/4 yard binding fabric 3/8 yard fusible webbing 17 X 45 piece of batting Cotton machine quilting thread for applique & sewing Transparent thread for quilting design
I enlarged the Celtic knot design from a picture of it by grafting it on 1 inch graft paper. It is measures 11.5 X 11.5 inches. I pinned the design paper on the fabric. I used a rotary cutter and ruIer to cut the straight edges. Cut 3 of the design. I finished cutting out the design with scissors. Pin the designs to the backing fabric by spacing them evenly on the background fabric. I fused the design to the background fabric to stablize it for the applique stitching. The background fabric measures 16.5 X 44 (WOF) for a table runner. After I appliqued the design to the backing fabric with a matching quilting thread, I pinned the batting between the backing and top. I used a ruler and rotary cutter to square up the edges. I used transparent thread to quilt around the design. To quilt the background fabric around the design, I drew a 3 leaf clover on quilting paper. I stitched a clover in each corner around the design. I cut 3 stripes 2 1/4 inches X WOF and sewed them together for the binding. I folded it in half and stitched it to the top of the table runner. I hand stitched the binding to the backing fabric.
I also made a wall hanging or candle mat using only 1 design. By changing the fabric selection, the design could be used for Valentine's Day as well. This is my own design for a St. Patrick's Day table runner. What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Test the applique stitch width before you start on a scrap piece of fabric. The applique stitching should outline the design and finish the edges of the fabric. The color contrasting is the key to making the design POP on the background fabric.
New to quilting and crafty. Love you user name "Goodwitch" It is awesome. By the way, I am Scot-Irish......well I am the Scot, the old man is the Irishman....then nobodies perfect...hehe.

I found the fabric at JoAnn's as part of their St. Patrick's Day holiday collection. You may be able to search the internet for on-line stores that carry it.
Search for a Flamingo picture on line and print it out. Use that as a pattern for an applique. You can enlarge it before you print it and then enlarge it with a copier as long as it doesn't get too distorted.
There was a problem with the Craftsy website so my pattern instructions were not visible for a few days. It looks like it has been resolved. Hope you enjoy making this project.
after printing out 25 pages of comments I still did not get the pattern. I would like to know how to get the pattern without printing out all the comments?
how do I print the pattern out without printing all the comments.?I have hardly any ink left after all the pages I had to print.
I love this pattern! I'm really into Celtic knotwork, so if you have any suggestions for good quilting books using Celtic knotwork, I'd love to know. Thanks!
My machine has applique stitches. If yours does not, you may be able to adjust a zigzag stitch to achieve the same results. Practice on some scraps. The curves are a challenge to make them look smooth.
Since I'm Irish all the way, plus an avid quilter, I found this awesome! Your own design I've never seen anywhere - be VERY proud of that! Thank you for sharing your work with others. How kind of you to do that!
Thank you so much for sharing the pattern. I have the background fabric in my stash and always look for ways to use it. It's marvelous. Love the hearts on top of it.
The pattern is my own and I shared the instructions above which include the materials and assembly. I do not have a picture of the Celtic knot design template I made on the 1 inch graft paper.
