This pattern is in a hardcover book from around 1990. The book is Women's Day Prize Winning Granny Squares and the pattern is by Helen M. Notebloom. I found this book on e-bay

Category: Crocheting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky, Casual, Retro / Vintage, Traditional

Materials

Red Heart Yarn

What was your inspiration?

I made this for a Christmas grab-bag. When it was finished I loved it and wanted to make another for myself - which I haven't done yet! lol

What are you most proud of?

I love the way the colors blend in this log cabin style afghan. I am proud that I got it finished in time for the grab bag!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I would try to match the colors given in the pattern as closely as possible. The basic pattern is really simple

Several have asked about the pattern but it is copyrighted. I am going to post the basics here without going into the whole pattern which you can gather from the picture anyway. Hook size - any you want to work with. Afghan consists of 8 squares of 6 different color families. Start with light shade ch 4. Row 1 - (right side) dc, ch3, dc in 4th ch from hook; ch 3, turn Row 2 - Work in back loop only from now on. Sk first dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch, ch 3 (corner loop made), sk center ch, 2 dc in next ch, dc in next dc, dc in top of ch 3, ch 3 (counts as first dc on next row), turn. Row 3 - Sk first dc, dc in each dc to corner loop, 2 dc in first ch, ch 3, sk center ch, 2 dc in next ch (corner), dc in each dc to end; ch 3, turn. Rows 4 thru 7 - repeat row 3 changing to medium shade on last row. Rows thru 12 - with medium shade repeat row 3, changing to darkest shade on last row. Rows 13 thru 15 - with darkest shade repeat row 3, changing to MC on last row. MC is the black color. Rows 16 thru 1 - with MC repeat row 3, fasten off. Assemble as in picture. Border is DC across with MC, 4 dc in each corner, ch 3 turn and work 2 more rows of DC in back loop only, fasten off
