Jordy Bag »

Instructions

I used the instructions from the Jordy Bag tutorial to figure out how to do the lining. The messenger bag is a blank one I got from Hobby Lobby for $6.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Unisex

Style: Hipster, Classic, Traditional, Casual

Materials

Plain Messenger Bag, Upholstery Fabric, Matching thread

What was your inspiration?

Previously, I had a Vera Bradley small messenger bag as my daily purse. But after a year's worth of wearing, it was starting to look a little beat up, so I was on the hunt to find something similar sized, but more durable and would go with more things. After searching online, I couldn't quite find something I liked, that was the right size, had enough pockets, wasn't too busy looking, etc. I then found these plain messenger bags at Hobby Lobby and found the Craftster tutorial on how to add the lining.

What are you most proud of?

Figuring out how to modify the tutorial instructions to fit the size of my messenger bag as well as adding pockets, with my limited sewing knowledge.

Here'e the lining tutorial (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=32204.0). As for the pockets, I kind of made it up on my own. Basically I just sewed some rectangles of fabric together, and then sewed the rectangles onto the lining before I put it in the bag.

I picked up the upholstery fabric a few years ago from my local Hancock Fabrics. I think it was maybe made by Waverly?

I'm not too sure. Are you trying to print the pattern off of the Craftster website or Craftsy?

It says in the description that she used the Jordy Bag tutorial to line this messenger bag that was purchased at Hobby Lobby. So, there is no pattern here to make it from scratch.

You did THIS and you say you have "limited sewing knowledge"? You used your great imagination and creative flair to figure out how to add the lining and pockets. I love the fabric choice. Did you hand sew the lining in? How long did it take you to do this?

Thanks! The lining is hand sewn in. Thankfully there was a hem on the original messenger bag that I used to line up the lining. Which is probably why it looks so straight. Overall, it took me about 6 - 8 hours to sew the lining and sew it into the bag. The hand sewing took the longest as the canvas of the messenger bag was very thick and it was difficult to get my needle in and out of it.

I have been knitting bags that are turning out beautifully. I need to learn about making lining and adding pockets. What do you suggest as a bottom stiffener at the base within the lining

I have heard of some people using that plastic mesh you use for needle point to stiffen the bottom of bags. I haven't personally done it myself, but it would work.

I use closed cell foam board to create a base.
