What was your inspiration?
I have multiple BOM's going on this year, having a ball. This one is challenging, curved piecing is always fun.
What are you most proud of?
Love the fabrics, I made a couple changes to her "recipe" .
#1. When you are cutting out the background fabric for each block, make them one inch larger than what is called for on the outside edges. There really is no wiggle room in this pattern otherwise, to be able to square the block up to 12.5 neatly.
#2. When I paper pieced the "fans", instead of measuring and trying to cut the 1/4 inch around the section of the block, because she does not include 1/4 inch seam allowances...I simply stitched a generous 1/4 inch from the seam line all the way around that portion. Then I trimmed right up to that stitching. Once it is pieced with the to curved portions then you can trim back that "stay" stitching and clip your curves.
#3. I put two pieces of fabric right sides together, placed the circle on top and stitched right on the line all the way around, tore off the paper, trimmed the seam close to the stitching, cut a slit in one piece, turned and pressed my perfect circle.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Make sure you cut your background fabric larger to give you wiggle room.
