This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Lace Shawl Design »

Instructions

This scarf started as a swatch of one of the charted patterns in the class. I added borders and garter stitch at each end and jut kept knitting because I was enjoying both the yarn and the pattern and the combined effects.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Outdoorsy, Traditional

Materials

DK weight 3-ply merino, hand-dyed. US#8

What was your inspiration?

I had just acquired this yarn and wanted to use it as a test. So, I started a swatch for the class, liked the effect, and decided to use up 2 skeins of the yarn to get an idea how it knitted. I have a fair amount of same yarn -- other colors and was curious about its drape and blocking.

What are you most proud of?

I'm not sure that there is anything really outstanding about this scarf. But I do like the combo of the colors and the lace pattern. I have a friend in mind who needs a long, warm scarf; so this already has a home (at least in my mind).

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This lace pattern has a varying number of stitches in each row; so it would be a good idea to place markers between patterns and make sure that each pattern ends correctly, because you can't depend on "counting" stitches to identify if something is wrong. But the pattern works very easily and is quick to memorize so it won't take long to get into the rhythm of the pattern.

Beautiful! The yarn makes it look like the stitch pattern almost undulates or moves and the effect is beautiful. What a lucky recipient!

Carol -- in fact the lace pattern does undulate -- it isn't a constant stitch count from row to row which is why I just put a couple of stitches on the edges -- I wanted to see what it would do to the drape of the wool. As I said earlier -- I'm well pleased with the exercise.

Amy -- This yarn really shows the pattern. I think a US8 was the right size to work the stitch on to make sure that the yarn overs were pronounced enough to show the leaves. I love this mix of colors, too.
