Materials

Crochet cotton, size 10 - bright yellow: 370 yds. (338 m), black: 310 yds. (283 m), and white: 230 yds. (210 m); size 9 (1.40 mm) steel crochet hook; flat round buttons in black: 1 - 3/4" button and 3 - 5/8" buttons

What was your inspiration?

I was playing with the idea of the color from the background showing through to highlight the design on the front.

What are you most proud of?

I like the way the black shows through to create the checkerboard design and the buttons were a fun added touch!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is similar to filet crochet, only worked diagonally to make the squares more symmetrical. Follow the instructions for the blocks and open spaces to create this design. The placemat is worked from the lower right corner to the upper left corner. The outside frame and center are created separately and crocheted together for a raised border. Be sure to use flat buttons for the flower centers.

The finished size is 13" wide x 17-1/4" long.

This pattern is available for $3.00 and is written in U.S. terms.
