Scraps of fabric - Kaffe Fasset mainly and some purple batiks for the petals of the flowers.
What was your inspiration?
I love working with Kaffe Fassett's fabrics and the scraps from previous projects worked very well with some purple batiks.
My mum and aunts have all made this bag, which is constructed of 22 hand sewn blocks done in Japanese folding work, so I had to make one too! Theirs are beautifully appliqued as well- they are far more patient than I am...
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of the colours working well together and that this was a joint effort between my mum and I - we worked together to cut and then divided the squares between us for sewing, my mum in South Africa and mine in the UK. We then worked together to sew it all together over the Christmas holiday.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
We used a round template in cardboard to stretch the round patches and then ironed them to keep the form.
The internal patches were quilted with a diagonal cross first, before the round were sewn on with a blind stitch.
I used a blanket stitch to sew the blocks together on the inside of the bag.
We used 'D'-rings to attach the handles (which were machine sewn.
