large Rose quilt

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Women

Style: Romantic

Materials

I used a stencil from Stencil Co. for the roses I painted and the same one for the quilting. The border is a combination of a feather stencil and the rose stencil. I changed the feathers to the feathers that go under the previous motif. I used fabric paints by SoSoft readily available along with fabric medium for the painted roses. The brush was put in the medium and just the tip was put in the paint. Only one red was used but the unevenness of the paint coverage gave many shades. The medium allowed the paint to move easily.

What was your inspiration?

Cindy's class has taught me so much and given me the tools to do wholecloth and I am slowly practicing all she has taught me. This is my first large quilt using some of what I have learned such as using and changing stencils and the under/over feathers.

What are you most proud of?

I am learning along with gaining knowledge and confidence. Cindy's class has something for all levels of quilters. And it sure challenged me.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't!!! Not really. It was a lot of hours microquilting and I just got it off the machine. So I am looking forward to a less intense project. My mind will recover and I will do another as intense in a few months. I think I would make that fill in feather motif in the corners bigger so there isn't as much microquilting.

It was a challenge to be sure. I really lucked out on the measurement of the borders so that the motif came so close to fitting exactly. Now that I have the experience, I will measure my stencil design first then make the quilt with borders in multiples of the stencil. I really procrastinated before marking and quilting the border just because I was not sure of how it would fit and if I could get it adjusted. I was afraid it would be four or five inches off. I thought I would just redraw the stencil if that happened.

I did make an awefully lot of starts and stops by combining the rose and the over/under feather but I love the effect. I certainly did learn a lot and did gain more confidence by doing this quilt.
