Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Beginner Serging: Machine Basics & Techniques »

Instructions

It was a bit challenging working with the laminated fabric (and likely not the wisest choice by me), but I am happy with the results.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Cute

Materials

Laminated fabric, fusible fleece, and nylon zipper

What was your inspiration?

The class! I love how organized, knowledgeable and helpful the instructor is.

What are you most proud of?

That I was able to make it with the laminate fabric.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make a lot of them -- they make great gifts and have fun picking out the fabric.

Love your bag. I've done a few and for prints that are in one direction I cut it in half and match the main fabric right sides together upside down. So now I have a crease on the bottom but know my fabric is going in the same direction on both sides and I know where to put my tabs. lol. I really like your bag.

Perfect. Love the choice of laminate. Good work considering no teflon foot.

Where did you find that oil cloth fabric. Love the print?

I purchased it at my local fabric shop, The Quilting Loft, but I have seen the main fabric at Fabric.com. It's called April in Paris.

That's what I was wondering. The fabric is unique but perfect for the project.

Looks just great! Did you use one of the teflon type of feet?

Thank you. I wish I had one for my serger. I have heard of putting painter's tape under the foot leaving space for the needles but I have not tried this.

I LOVE the laminate! I'm sure it was very tricky since it sticks to itself so much, but wow! It's boxed out so nicely and looks great!

I tried several times to have the seams of the tabs inside the tab, but with all that sticking, I could not pull the otherside through, so I just went with a folded tab style instead. Thanks for the great project, I'm really enjoying the class.

I really like your bag, thanks for sharing. I was thinking about trying laminate, but think my machine may struggle. I'm about to try my first bag at the weekend.

Perhaps try making something really simple with laminate first, like a lunch bag. I think you'll really like having some bags made with laminate. Good luck!

Thanks! I love laminate fabric and have made projects with it before but it was a lot of fabric to put through my serger with fusible fleece and a zipper in one pass. I also had a thin layer of tissue paper to prevent the laminate from sticking to my serger bed. Next time I'll put painter's tape over the serger bed instead.

Oops I should have put this under the reply for ameryan, but my iPad version did not allow we to add a reply.

I really like this - cool fabric! Laminated is practical. You said maybe not the wisest choice - did you just mean as a first project? Would you use laminated again?
