Knit Fraken Pattern Dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials »

Instructions

I am a knit convert. I love knits.
I used walking foot, serger, twin needles, serger and feeling like I can tackle any knit fabric.

This dress is for my daughters xmas party.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic, Casual

Materials

Light to medium weight four way stretch fabric

What was your inspiration?

Meg class on sewing knits really gave me the courage to try knit fabrics. I have now added some beautiful knits to my stash with plans for more dresses, tops and pants.

What are you most proud of?

My daughter wanted a dress for her company christmas party and she picked the fabric. I did. Notvwant to tell her that her fabric choice was not suitable so I just wentbahead tried. I used a very light weight unstable knit and used the same fabric and self lined the dress and it still has a soft hand and lovley drape.

That my daughter is very happy with the dress and the fit.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be careful and pay attention to recommended fabrics on patterns. If you substitute do research.

This dress looks fantastic on her, she'll war it with pride at the holiday party! I like how you take parts of patterns that already work and put them together to make a new project. I'm totally doing that with my couture dress pattern pieces.

Very pretty indeed! I'm still struggling to decide whether knits are for me. Could you have made it without your serger?

Yes you can the key is stretch needle and very tiny zig zag stitch on all seams and twin stretch needles Schmetz 4,0/90 for the finished hems.

Thank you. I am working on both the Classic shirt using pattern Vogue 8689 and Sewing for Plus Sizes using Vogue 8815. No idea which I will finish first. Waiting on felling foot for the classic shirt and taking on the challenge in re-design the Vogue pattern in Plus Size class.

Beautiful . . . both the dress and the daughter! You're inspiring me to go ahead and take the knits class. I recently purchased a black and white animal print knit for a similar dress. Can't wait to try. It's in the qeue, but will have to wait until a few other projects (requests from my daughters and SON) are done. I, too, am curious to know how you lined this dress. Did you treat it like an underlining and sew it as one piece, or did you actually make a separate lining and then sew it in? This is also convincing me that it's time to get to know my serger. It does absolutely no good sitting on the floor of my sewing room. You do good work, lady!

Great job Scheri; I love the dress style. Is there a pattern number? How do you self line? I would like to do this to make some of the knit fabrics more substantial but I'm not sure how to do it.

I used Vogue 8409 for the bodice and sleeves and used the muslin from the skirt portion of my dress from the Coutre class

I drafted a waist inset much like a waistband to a skirt but added the curve to top at centre front. I sewed each bodice front and back separate. Then attached them to each other at shoulder and side seams. Made up skirt portions separate then basted them together at waistline and attached to inset then onto bodice. Then
