What advice would you give someone starting this project? I did not use a pattern, just made a few and experimented with the details that I liked, varying the shape and brim finishes. They are single crochet, the back basket has a row of slip stitch around the top. The other two have small branches bound onto the top. All are painted inside with a 50/50 mixture of white glue and water which makes them very stiff and durable. These are about 4" in diameter.

I love your baskets! great idea to use the branches around the top. I'm getting inspired!! THANKS!

I used Willow branches which were quite pliable and easy to work with. But when dried they became brittle and are too fragile for much more than decorative use. Would be interesting to try a heavy reed grass, maybe more durable and give the same rustic look.

Instead of the willow branches, you could use a thicker hemp rope wrapped in fabric, yarn or plain. Stiffened like the rest of the basket or added handles to loop soft or hard?

These are very cool! Did you use a wool thread or some other kind of string to crochet them?
