What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I did not use a pattern, just made a few and experimented with the details that I liked, varying the shape and brim finishes. They are single crochet, the back basket has a row of slip stitch around the top. The other two have small branches bound onto the top. All are painted inside with a 50/50 mixture of white glue and water which makes them very stiff and durable. These are about 4" in diameter.
