Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Casual, Traditional, Mod

Materials

cotton fabrics, Isacord thread

What was your inspiration?

Thanks to applekrisp for the idea of the pieced background on the wheel.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I didnt use a backing on the wheel - just ironed the tops of the blades back a 1/4" and then sewed them as for the traditional Dresden.

Great use of batiks! The old Dresden is so much more dimensional.

Thanks, Sue, got the background idea from applekrisp - I like the Dresdens (much to my surprise) and I even had fun with the hexies (another surprise). I really like sampler quilts!

Waiting is not one of my skills either -- but I am now TWO months behind. Life has been hectic! I'm hopeful I can get to June some time this week. And... then... to July (before August!). We'll see. Alyx

DARNS ! It was YOU that made the terrific dragonfly! I couldn't remember! (Thank you for the inspiration -- you are the reason I made *my* dragonfly.) And I LOVE these July blocks.

Thanks, AlyxRansom, just had another look at your mountain dragonfly - such a great block! I really, really want to get the rest of blocks done & get these assembled. Waiting this long is not one of my skills - -

Darns, you have done an excellent job with this month's blocks. Love the way you have quartered your background and your blanket stitch looks absolutely perfect. Can't wait to see what you do when we get next month's lessons. Your quilt will look beautiful.

Wow Darns! These are both stunning. They absolutely shimmer with beauty. I love that center fabrc! So glad you posted all your blocks. I didn't realize you are doing a whole quilt in these colors. It's going to be simply fantastic!

Thanks so much, Jean, the center fabric started the whole thing. I found myself looking for subdued peaches, peachy-brown, browns, kind of an icy blue or green fabrics. These fabrics sat around for a long time until this class came along and my friend Lesley like the colors.

Fantastic. You come up with greatest blocks. I would like to maybe do my modern dresden plate similar to yours, if you don't mind. I have been playing around with my fabrics trying to find something that appeals to me. I had thought about half & half but I like your quarter sections better.

Sure, ginnyt3, go ahead & use the idea (as I got it from applecrisp) - don't you love borrowing ideas from all the great blocks out there!

I too had planned not to back the modern Dresden plate as I did not like the effect resulting from the triple layer. Happy to see this will work. Exquisitely executed.

Thanks, Pamillia, this quilt is for a friend of 45+ years. She also does occasional quilting & no one has made her a quilt.

My photography is not great as the block is brown & blue but it would look good for a peppermint block in red & white
