What was your inspiration?
A girl on our team recently got married. Made this cake as a surprise shower for her. Her wedding colors were a Fall palette, so this is what I came up with.
What are you most proud of?
That I was able to do the striped fondant technique, and even though it's hard to tell in this photo, the stencil technique on the bottom box (orange).
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I think it's difficult to really guage the importance of supports when the demonstration is done using cake dummies. With actual cake, it's much more difficult to move the tiers around, and guage where to put supports in. With styrofoam, sitting one tier on the edge of another is fine. Not so much with cake (at least cakes that are not overly dense). This cake basically survive transport (I put a dowel down through the Hatbox down to the bottom, and another through the square present on edge), but just barely. The striped square was the biggest issue. I shouldn't have set it on the corner, but rather an entire side edge I think. Lesson learned!
