Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Topsy-Turvy Cake Construction »

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Unisex

Style: Whimsical, Mod, Funky

Materials

White Chocolate and Dark Chocolate marble mud cake, vanilla buttercream and covered in fondant and decorated in fondant, diamante bands, diamantes and an acrylic cake topper.

What was your inspiration?

My daughter really wanted a 21st cake that was completely different to what she had ever seen before, I searched the net, and when I saw the Topsy Turvy course knew I had found the cake!!

What are you most proud of?

Calculating the angle and being able to achieve the height without it turning into a disaster.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Spend the time on the maths to get the positioning of the cakes correct.

Love it!!! But really, How did you stack the last tier without fallling apart? Because it does'nt look like that last tier it's holded by the main pole.

I took Richard R;s class, but in this cake, I cannot "see" it. Would you mind posting a pic of the tiers and inner structure? BTW, your fondant work is awesome!

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by 'inner structure'.

Where you placed the pipe and dowels. Like Richard's sketch when he was showing his drawing in the video.

I just don't see how a dowel going straight up from the board makes it through all 4 of those tiers... is there more to it than what Richard shows in the course? Just wondering... it's a fantastic cake.

The dowel is on the far right of the cake, as close to the edge as we could get and on a slight angle. It really is a balancing act to get it right.

Okay... I guess I can see that straight line now... at an angle... it's amazing! Thanks for answering my question. I guess that was a super balancing act!

You did an absolutely amazing job on your creation. I'm surprised Richard Ruskell himself hasn't complimented you on this as you truly did his lesson proud and I'm sure, once seeing this work of art, many more will sign up for his class just to learn how you did it. Your daughter must have been thrilled and her friends are still talking about it. I applaud you.

Your cake is gorgeous!!! I know many have asked you, but still can't figure out how the fourth tier is supported. For sure it is not supported by the main dowel, but anyway it is magnificent. A true inspiration! Thanks for sharing!

As I have said before, the top tier is a dummy, so very very light weight... It is only just pierced through with the dowel, we put a really sharp point on the end of dowel and had to have 3 goes of positioning the cake to be able to do all 4 tiers with the one piece of dowel. so the cake itself ended up with a few holes, but no-one knew once it was all put together.

I reply to these messages then they disappear - Weird ! This is a real cake except for the top tier, if I had more guests it would have been all cake, it has a wooden piece of dowel down the centre, but really had to do the maths to get it right, took a couple of goes.

I try to visualize the dowel going up, it looks like it would barely reach the third tier of cake without popping out. Did the third separator and 4th tier get some other support?

I had replied to your comment when I first read it, but it seems to have disappeared, you are right, it was very touch n' go, we had 3 ties at it before we got the position right to use just one support all the way through. You really have to do the maths to get it to balance. I am making another one next month and will put a picture up for you to see.

This is the first cake I had made like this, and I learnt how to do it from the lesson - actually the only reason I did the lesson was to learn the technique for my daughter's birthday cake.

I used a piece of wooden board as the base, and inserted a piece of dowling the height of the cake. You have to get the maths right and the example in the lesson works perfectly. If the maths is right, the cake will stay up. Of course you have to set the two top tiers up at the venue, the cake can't be transported put together.

I've watched the wonky cake titorial, but is that topp tier a dummy??
Kristin Winsall on craftsy.com
Jul 14, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes, the top tier is a dummy, but only because we had more than enough cake for our guests ( actually way too much ) if I had to cater for more I would make the whole lot out of cake.
