Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Beyond Basic Machine Quilting »

Instructions

I FMQ motifs that added details to the panel. I outlined the various motifs on the baby panel first. This allowed me to remove more pins to do the FMQ; the technique serves the same purpose as stitch in the ditch for patchwork blocks. By FMQ my control is improving....great practice, practice, practice that is resulting in a practical use.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Infant/Baby

Style: Cute, Whimsical

Materials

Purchased panel selected by the expectant mother. I plan to give it to her at her baby shower.

What was your inspiration?

I tried to just add details and motifs that added to the quilt panel. I got ideas for my FMQ from the class and from Leah Day's filler book.

What are you most proud of?

My control is gradually improving... my circles look more like circles. The back looks great.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make practice bats first.... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE. Then do some FMQing on small projects such as baby quilts, home dec items, pillow before you invest time and money in a really big quilt........... UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY BRAVE.

I think this is a great way to learn control of FMQ... you are concentrating on following and outlining but not designing your own motifs. When you get better and go to a pieced project it makes it easier

Darling, simply darling. You are right on the practice part and doing small things first. I always say we learn a little at a time.
