What was your inspiration?

A photo of my niece when she was a little girl, practicing twirling like Wonder Woman (a popular tv series of the day). I cropped all but her head and shoulders from the photo.

What are you most proud of?

The way the eyes turned out, and the fact that it actually looks very much like her - never thought I'd be able to accomplish that, as I'm not an artist and have never been good at doing human or animal figures.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure you really think about the overlay, and how it affects the picture. I loved the teardrop/rain idea as my niece lives on what we fondly call the "wet coast" (rather than the west coast), but when I proudly showed it to my husband, he said he really liked the idea, but the large raindrop looked like a 'noose' around her neck! Of course, now that's all I see is that darned noose!!!

Thank you, Lola, and classmates, for your kind comments. I barely see the 'noose' anymore - and I've convinced myself that the 'teardrop/raindrop' on her cheek defines what the larger shape is.....

I didn't see a "noose" at all but a very clever overlay of a raindrop framing her face. I like it.

I admired your picture for some time before I read your description about the "noose"-- certainly did not see that until it was pointed out. Unfortunately once that is in your mind it is impossible to get it out. If it really bothers you I would suggest trying to make some changes on a picture of your portrait (not on the real thing) to see if you could crop it so that the "noose" is not a complete circle or perhaps add some lines so that the picture continues on top of the noose so it would be less obvious. You could do this by coloring the hair and thread painting the background. if you do it on a photocopy of your picture you can see whether you might like it.

Thank you for seeing the raindrop - I agree with Lola's critique that it would have been better off-centre, but it's too late for that now! And yes, men can be very silly, but my husband has always been my best critic, and a fair one, so I had to take his comment into consideration.
