Jean Jacket

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
McCalls MP203

Instructions

Pattern (which I've had for a long time . . . may be out of print) goes together very well. Pieces fit together easily. I did attach the collar before sewing up the side seams. This is just a personal preference.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Traditional, Classic, Casual

Materials

This beautiful fabric is an Italian silk/cotton blend, purchased from A Common Thread in Austin, TX. Interfacing is Pro Weft Medium Weight from Pam Erny.

What was your inspiration?

I had made this jacket before and knew it was a good reliable pattern. I wanted to make my mother a Christmas gift that would be both beautiful and easy to put together. I found this gorgeous fabric at A Common Thread, a delightful fabric store in Austin, TX, and knew I had a winner.

What are you most proud of?

The speed and accuracy with which I made it. This does have a lot of top-stitching ( so purchase extra thread), and this is a great pattern to practice that skill. Lots of straight lines to be edge-stitched and top-stitched.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Find a good, simple pattern and then go on the hunt for really beautiful fabric. You can't go wrong. A jean jacket is a basic that will always be stylish. Take the time to finish all the seams. And finish it off with beautiful buttons. I did use a smaller than usual size for this pattern . . . it runs a little large.

Go for it, Keva1. The pattern I used is out of print, but you can probably find another good one. Such a good wardrobe staple.

The pattern number is MP203. I bought it several years ago and it's out of print. I found a copy of it for sale on Etsy. Here's the link: http://www.etsy.com/listing/95485622/jean-jacket-pattern-mccalls-mp-203-sz-8

Scheri, for me sewing IS taking a break. For the past 3 weeks I've practically been chained to a piano. I plan to go through a couple of Craftsy classes during the break. I'll post the results.

Thank you, Cheryl. I make the jewelry for me and a few for friends for now. It's a lot of fun, but I really need to get back to sewing. I have so many fabrics, and no new sewing projects yet.

Thank you, Chris. It is such a joy to make gifts instead of buying something that's not really needed.
