What materials did you use? quilter's cottons

What advice would you give someone starting this project? When you work in wood they say "measure twice, cut once." I'd say the same goes for quilting.

Mine came out a full quarter inch smaller than they were supposed to, even WITH my new 1/4" foot and adjusted needle. Maybe I should bump the needle one tick to the right. Or maybe not. I didn't bother to rip the seams out, it'll just have to do!
