All 4 Jan blocks

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes »

Instructions

If you're using Fat Quarters - you only need to cut two pieces for the 2 1/2" strips. I ended up with two extra strips. You will need four pieces for the 1 1/2" strips.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Charity

Style: Casual, Traditional, Romantic, Classic

Materials

Cotton fabric and thread. Magic Sizing.

What was your inspiration?

The newest Craftsy BOM course.

What are you most proud of?

I had very little wasted fabric for these blocks and trimmings were slivers! All 4 blocks squared up to 6 1/2" with no problems.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be careful - I sliced into my 1st center square when trimming the 2nd piece. I also ended up with a stray selvage during piecing - not sure how. Next time I'll trim selvages like I normally do. Pay attention to the teacher. She gives a LOT of valuable tips! I used Magic Sizing before the last square up - just to make sure things were flat.

I love the stripe and floral print. They work so well together. I'm doing my blocks from my scrappy stash so I need to hurry and get them finished. Can't wait to see your blocks for the rest of the quilt. Your pictures of your other projects are just breathtaking!

I actually broke down and bought fabric from Walmart - which I don't usually do, but it was just so needed for this quilt. Very funky. I already had some white so that was taken care of. I learned a new technique in re-piecing the past quilt to NOT press until the entire piece is done. I do press them flat before I cut, but then an iron never touches it again. My blocks are coming out much squarer - with no wonkiness ( is that a word ). Even on the cheaper fabric the finger pressing worked fine. Then I use just plain water in a spray bottle to press it out. BTW - I LOVE YOUR FABRIC CHOICE. It's so SPRINGY!

Hi Sally Jo - Walmart? I've bought fabric at Walmart - mostly pre-cuts. I do believe "wonkiness" is a word - at least in my Quilt Dictionary :D I'm gonna give that no iron business a try. My knees will thank me on some projects! Look forward to your new blocks.

Hello and Happy New Year! I just love your fabrics! The stripes are going to be fun! I can't wait to see what lovely things you come up with, for this BOM! I've chosen to use the polka dots from the kit, which arrived today! This makes me think I might like to do a second set with stripes.... Lol! I think I'm going to miss being your "twin" -- you have flown past me! I love it! You are my inspiration!! :)

My goodness, Jean! You don't waste any time, do you? Love your fabrics. Isn't it exciting, everyone starting out on the new BOM? I didn't join the 2012 one until October, so it all got done in rather a hurry (not quite finished yet) so I'll take it at a more leisurely pace this year. I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress - such a lovely thing to do, and practically every quilt different!

Well, here we all are - back on track for the New Year! Your fabrics are so refreshing - very good FL choice. Big change from your gorgeous black, white & red BOM. I predict mine will be much like your black one since mine had white for the background. I'm just starting the FMQ of that Sampler. I've done my practicing & now everything is a go! Also received January block from Amy's Sugar Block Club that I'm going to do as a Christmas quilt. Bought the Repiecing Civil War - Past & Present too, so all those projects need fabrics to be purchased! This BOM is already starting out so differently. Seeing the quilt and diagrams is REALLY helpful for your head! Lol
