Instructions

I didn't like the fullness in the back near the armhole of the pink jacket I made but loved the design. The focal point is diamonds filled with feathers the concentric circles of feathers. I used a stencil from Stencil.com the 38" for the circles and the out arches and filled them with the feathers. I love that the simple shapes made such a gorgeous design on my pink jacket and repeated it.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Romantic

Materials

Pale denim lightweight with dark denim blue stitching. Judy Mathison Quilt as you go Log Cabin Jacket and straight collar change

What was your inspiration?

Thank you Cindy, you made designing my own quilt designs so simple. The design looks over whelming to me, yet I know it is just diamonds in a circle and some circles and an arc from a stencil and was so easy to do. I love the feathers appearing to go under another design. I was tired when I did the sides of the jacket and put intertwining feathers, my fall back. After finished and having some sleep, I thought "I could have done the McTavishing with the pearls among it. Oh well, next time.

What are you most proud of?

I bought the pattern in 1985 and was able to walk right to it. The jacket is comfortable, fits well, and can be worn in my life for so many of my activities. I am so pleased with it's outcome. I have come full circle. I started quilting with clothing and now am back to it. But this jacket doesn't look like something that could be made at home..

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you haven't taken Cindy's class, take it. It is amazing how easy it is do design and do quilting designs that look so complex yet they are simple lines.

WOW! Did you quilt the fabric and then make the jacket or vice versa?

The pieces of the jacket are quilted first. I put an outline of the piece on the fabric and then add at least an inch all the way around. The quilting causes the piece to pull up. And if I am going to wash it before cutting out the piece, I allow an extra 2" all the way around each pattern piece.

Wow, what a work of art. You must wear it as you can always make another. Isn't that what quilters do??

It looks too beautiful to wear and risk something happening to it. Maybe I say that because its rare to make it to 10am without my boys smearing something on me. Love it

I spilled teryaki sauce on it the first time I wore it. Thankfully it rinsed off without washing the whole jacket. I was picking up my husband's take out container and really got a lot on it. I was so lucky it came out. I wear it all the time. Most people do not even realize I made it. I can't believe I made it.
