Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Toy

For: Children

Style: Whimsical, Cute

Materials

flannelette for the body, felt for the hair, quilting cotton for the dress

What was your inspiration?

I have a doll this size from 1983 whose face is awake on one side and asleep on the other. Obviously, I altered this one (no face at all! Although I may add closed eyes with eyelashes on my next try). I also used the original doll to pattern the simple dress, which I did reversible.

What are you most proud of?

Making a doll! I make stuffies all the time but I never thought to make an actual doll. This is quite small - about 10" top to bottom - but just the right size for my two-year-old to snuggle.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The felt hair is finicky. I ended up stitching the entire thing to the head of the doll. I originally only wanted to do a few stitches. But it didn't sit right. Just be prepared to play around with it. (I cut it in two pieces, sewed it together with wrong sides facing, flipped it inside out and put it on the doll like a hat.)
