What are you most proud of? I won a blue ribbon at the Tulsa State Fair for this bonnet! This was my first Fair entry ever, and I was thrilled to see my work on display.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Learn to tat! I don't know how to tat with a shuttle, but followed Barbara Foster's instructions in "Learn Needle Tatting Step-by-Step," published by Handy Hands Tatting. Very useful photographs, and a DVD is also available. Don't be intimidated! Lace making is rather simple, especially if you have slight experience with knitting or crochet.

WOW! Amazing! This job in France (where it is originally from) it's named "Frivolit`e" also in Spain is named same way. I used to do it, but I never saw anyone else doing it. Congratulations, keep the good work, and in no time you will get your altar cover! It is an art that should not die.

Thank you so much! I've also seen it called Frivolite in German, perhaps because they adopted the word themselves. I'm glad to hear from another tatter!

It's really lovely. I have a few items that my late mother tatted edging for, such as the hanky I carried 32 years ago for my wedding (I hope my daughter will carry it). She tried to teach me to tat, but alas, I just couldn't master that little twitch of the thread on the circle. Maybe needles would be easier to learn?

I look at instructions and pictures for shuttle tatting and I feel bewildered. I found needle tatting very simple to do, just one basic stitch. I followed this book http://www.hhtatting.com/detail.cfm?ID=1 and four months later (and some starter projects), I'd completed the bonnet. :-) Give it a try!

Beautiful work! I've seen the pattern, but never saw it worked up. Really gorgeous!
