What was your inspiration?

During her long life, Iris had made hundreds of knitted and crocheted toys for underprivileged children, and had even knitted an enormous bedspread but had never tried quilting. She was most interested in my first couple of quilts which I took to show her, At that time she was fast approaching her 90th birthday and had become frail and unable to continue with her crafting. I therefore decided to make her a little quilt of her own for her September birthday, to put over her knees on cold winter evenings. I very quickly put together a quilt from odds and ends in my stash, using a very simple pinwheel block. I decorated it with a few Suffolk Puffs (that's what we call Yo-Yos) here and there with buttons in the middle. It was ready just in time for her 90th birthday and Iris was delighted with it. Sadly, Iris passed away just before Christmas that year but I hope she had a little comfort from the quilt in her last days. Her family didn't want it after her death and returned it to me as they felt it would be a pity to send it to a charity shop where it might end up in someone's dog's basket.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I made it, start to finish, in just a few days.

If you look at my other projects you'll see a rather unattractive green and yellow quilt entitled "How to Fold a Quillow". That gives some instructions and I know that someone has already made one from those instructions. I've also given the names of a couple of books that explain the process, but I think that information is with one or other of my other projects - either Jacqueline's, Christopher's or Miranda's Quillows. Please let me know if I can help with further clarification.

Aw this is so lovely and the reason for making the quilt. I especially love the little yoyo's makes it just that little bit more special.

Desna - you'll probably understand this. Iris used to organise the Poppy Day collection her village and I therefore made one of the yo-yos like a poppy for her. Her husband was also something of a hero in the war and was in the RAF and also had a lot to do with the Malta Star Association. Therefore some of the quilt, in a rather small and vague way, commemorated that.

I was going to ask "when do you sleep?" but after reading the loving story behind this quilt its easy to see where your motivation came from. Lovely work.

Thank you. I was actually working when I made this one, so it was made in the evenings! Now I've retired I'm glued to the sewing machine (or the computer)!

Very nice quilt and a lovely story behind it. I am sure you think of the fond memories of Iris whenever you look at it. She was blessed to have you in her life, I am sure this gesture meant a lot to her!

I love hearing the stories behind quilts, they are all so special. Iris will have had much pleasure in the short time she had this quilt, especially knowing it was made for her by you. What a neat touch the yoyos are! Can't wait to finish my first quilt, it's a pinwheel one too.
