Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Machine Quilting: Free-Motion & More »

Instructions

I combined both stitch in the ditch throughout with the monofilament; and free motion quilting on the inside and outside background areas.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Casual, Outdoorsy

Materials

A foundation paper pieced wall quilt top I completed previously which was put away because I couldn't figure out how to quilt it, monofilament and cordinating threads, walking foot (my absolute favorite machine foot), BSR free motion foot. The pattern by Liz Schwartz and Stephen Seifert was from an old quilting magazine. The quilt top was advanced, but the quilting was moderate

What was your inspiration?

The craftsy class. This quilt top had been put away because I couldn't figure out how I wanted to quilt it. The class gave me the confidence to dive in.

What are you most proud of?

That I finished it!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Figuring out what quilting you want to do is intimidating. I realized with this project (and the course) that if you just start, the creative process just seems to fall in place.

I have the same quilt done and waiting to be quilted! I loved the process of paper piecing and this design was very detailed, so I have put it in the closet until I feel I have the confidence to start the process of quilting it. Thanks for sharing. I am inspired to pull it out this fall and plan the quilting for it. Right now I'm in the process of making a queen size quilt for my 16 year old granddaughter, so I have priorities. Hers is a paper pieced project also. She chose the three block designs and we shopped for the main colors, so when I finish it, I will try my machine quilting on it. I will share it when finished.

Judi - would you post a pic of your iris quilt top? I'd like to see your colors! Its funny, I started quilting it once, then tore out the stitches and put it away. I like paper piecing also. It was fun doing the New York Beauty with paper. I like how paper piecing makes everything look so crisp. I will

Oops, hit the wrong key. I will "follow" you in hoping you post your butterfly. Have not yet quilted my New York Beauty - got sidetracked on more art quilt pieces. Can't wait to see the quilt for your granddaughter.

After watching Wendy's course, I realize what to do with the fabric panel I've had stashed away! It's children's fabric, but the perfect practice piece (p,p,p..) for this.

The quilt top was my second paper pieced project. Don't know what possessed me to try something so advanced - there were so many little sections to finish and put together. Now I feel I could piece anything. Do you have a favorite style of quilting that you used to like to do? I started quilting a couple of years ago when my old machine died and I got a Bernina. Before that, it was clothing and accessories.

NICE JOB. The classes have given me the confidence to actually quilt two quilts that had been put away long ago! Congratulations!

Thank you. I find myself more acutely aware of the quilting on other's projects. Seeing what others are doing is also giving me more confidence to try. Unfortunately, now that school is out for the summer, there is less time in the day for sewing!
