Quilting Quickly II: Patterns, Techniques & Tips »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Charity

Style: Cute

Materials

Daisies and Dots by Robert Kaufman

What was your inspiration?

I was interested in tube quilting and wanted to try it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

When you quilt the top, make sure your tension is right. I missed that one. Hopefully I'll remember the next time. : )

You'll do fine. You may want to check out a forum that is GREAT for beginners and those who have quilted for some time. Check into it, Lots of moral support and they help with any question you may have. The site is "Missouri Star Quilt Co.mpany" I am on that forum a lot so I'll look for you. : )

We all started at the beginning, hon. I just started a coupleof years ago and have got bitten by the bug badly. There is so much on the internet now that you can find all the basics and much more info as you progress. Just remember, the first project doesnt have to be perfect, it is a learning process.you may see your mistakes, but folks who dont quilt will never know , and they will be amazed. Start with a small project and work up. Have fun!

Is there a local store that runs classes? I was like you, had all the theory sorted in my head... had even cut fabric for the blocks... just needed the push the get the fabric to the machine! Almost finished my 1st quilt now ( and confess to several "side projects" running at the same time! The Block of Month here on CRAFTSY is brilliant!)

The instructors here at Craftsy are great. Check out what I learned from Kimberly Einmo and the Chainsaw block. I combined it with the Woven borders from Peggy Martin's class. You just have to go for it. The best tip I can give you is press before you cut. Press while you sew and be accurate with your quarter inch seams.

If you love quilts and love fabrics you are ahead of the game. Start with one that isn't overly complicated to avoid becoming discouraged but be sure it's a pattern you like. Good luck to you; I know you can do it because you have the desire.

I don't know what happened below but you got about 50 of the same response. I would like to suggest getting Eleanor Burns book, "Make A Quilt in A Day." She explains everything clearly for any beginner, whether it be about basic equipment, supplies, and making a quilt from beginning to end. She tells and illustrates the entire procedure, shows different sizes of quilts & their yardage. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I there, I know I used a half of the colored jelly roll but I can't remember if the white was the same amount. It probably is because in the pattern you reverse each strip set. 1 color/2 whites, then 2 colors/ 1 white.

What a calming and pretty quilt -- love the idea of a-block-at-a-time...have never tried that. Your color choices are excellent, and I'm no formal judge, but my eyes felt as if they were "rested" after looking at your quilt for a while -- that's a compliment. Also, your quilt is squared up very nicely -- not easy to do, technically, when its a block at a time. Congratulations -- if I had a Quilt Show "winner's" ribbon, I'd send it to you.

Really pretty! I'd never heard of "tube quilting", but will have to look into it further. For anyone interested in joining a group, there's lots of support & goodwill in most groups. Ask around your town or local activity or senior center, as they usually know where a regular one meets; just find one that suits you. I joined a hand-quilting group about 8 years ago & love them all dearly - they're my extended family now; I'm the youngest at 60 & the eldest is 90! I've leaned so much about quilting & my new home-town.

You did a great job! Quilting and fabrics are SO addicting! I have this quilt, "Summer in the Park" on my to do list next. There is a video on YouTube of how to make this one, that's where I first saw it. The MissourStar Quilt Company has great learning videos. I'm waiting for my white jelly roll to arrive in the mail so I can use it to make this pattern. Did you get it professionally quilted or did you do it yourself? Did you use jelly rolls or cut your own fabrics? Very nicely done! I know once you make a quilt you can't stop at one.....
Brook on craftsy.com

Thank you, it was fun to make. I used jelly rolls for the colored part, but cut the fabric for the white part since it needed to be larger that the 2.5" of the jelly roll width. And yes I did quilt it myself. : )
