Instructions

I wanted a very simple, floaty, classic design to highlight the special fabric, which was a bit narrow in width. So, I pinned the princess seams together and the sides seams together along the cutting lines, which also upsized the smock a bit. Both of these sets of seams were drafted on the pattern with completely straight lines, so why cut and sew the seams? So, I cut the body of the smock in ...

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Plus-sized

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

Hand painted, embroidered silk shantung.

What was your inspiration?

The fabric. I had it for a while. Of course, I pre-washed it so that I can launder the smock. I bought the fabric for about $10/yd. and had 4 yards of it, with a big remnant left over.

What are you most proud of?

How fast it was to make.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Remember that smocks are meant to be worn loosely. Classic designs are classics for a reason: they do what they do well.

This is a beautiful blouse. Almost looks like a brocade. Place me on board as one who would take another class. Been tied up with being sick and Christmas, but can't wait to get started on 8815

Beautiful blouse. I love the piping. Do you throw the piping into the washer/dryer before using it? I hope you do another class?

This is cheap 'ol Maxi-Piping that comes pre-made in little cellophane packages from my local sewing store, and I am sorry to say that it is polyester, so I have never bothered to pre-shrink it. I suppose the filler cord could shrink, but this is silk, so I will hand launder in cold water and hang it to dry.

I love your top. I would wear that to a party or just out and about. I agree with Chris Lucas, I think you should do another class. I enjoyed the class so much that while taking another class by someone else a few people had questions on how to make the dress to fit their plus sized bodies I told them to take your course.

Another great top with more ideas for us... I do hope you plan on doing another class for us Barbara as there's definitely a lot more you can teach us that's for sure :)

Really pretty. I want to try adding piping to project but everytime I get to the point I chicken out.

I hate to admit it, but this is good 'ol, cheap Maxi Piping that comes ready-made in the cellophane packages! I HATE that it is polyester, but it is fast to use. Don't be chicken to try new techniques! There's this thing called a seam ripper. . . . I use one plenty!
