What was your inspiration?
I needed an Easter present for my grand daughter, and she has read all the Hunger Games, of course, so I decided on the book cover.
What are you most proud of?
Creating the graph was pretty difficult, there is a free knitting graph maker available here:
But the problem is that the smallest graph is 48 sts wide and I really needed to convert to a bigger gauge.
That done, I used the paint bucket in MS Paint to color the fields between the grid lines to the solid gold.
The other challenge was the Fair Isle Knitting, I had very little experience with it and played with several methods of carrying the 2 skeins of yarn and the floating strands in the back. For this project I decided to twist the yarn after every stitch to keep the tension even for the long distances before the color change.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
The book cover gauge ended up different for the fair isle area than the blank side, so you'll have to adjust for the difference when blocking.
Check out YouTube for all the different ways to hold the yarn for Fair Isle knitting, I learned a lot. Here is another source for creating graph paper in the exact gauge you want, in case you just want to use some color pencils and draw in the spaces yourself.
