The oven mitt is from the book "Denyse Schmidt Quilts". I added a loop for hanging and finished the edge with binding instead of a hem with pompoms. I don't know if the loop will be handy but it's nice to have just in case you have a hook somewhere in your kitchen. I used Insul-Bright batting and doubled it because I have found that one layer isn't enough to protect from hot dishes/pans. The double layer makes it difficult to hem so binding is the best solution for finishing the ends. It's the only way I like to finish this mitt. An alternate option for the Insul-Bright is wool batting.
I based the front of the hot pad on the block pattern "What a Bunch of Squares" from the same book. The hot pad was put together following the steps you would use to make a quilt--piece, quilt sandwich, quilt, bind.You can read more about this project on my blog, Dia's Days.
