This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Machine Embroidered Quilt »

Instructions

I made a mini-quilt of the Hourglass embroidery designs and turned them into a handbag. You can view the tutorial on my blog:
http://dzgns.com/blog/2012/09/mini-quilts-make-great-handbags/

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

Upholstery fabric and batting

What was your inspiration?

I love the hourglass designs and wanted to see how they looked in upholstery fabrics!

What are you most proud of?

The straps! I love the grommets and the way the buttons keep the straps in place.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use fusible web on the wrong side of the applique fabric (the darker tan fabric) because a handbag gets a lot of wear and tear. The permanent fusing will hold the appliques in place.

I purchased the Craftsy class just so I could make this bag. I have the Jan/Feb issue of Designs in Machine Embroidery Mag and the fabric requirements call for ONLY 1/4yd of 55" inch wide fabric from which you are supposed to get 3 panel that measure 5 1/2" x 19 1/2" - I bought 1/3yd (cause JoAnns ALWAYS cuts crooked) and will start this tomorrow but I don't think the fabric is enough because 3 x 19 1/2" is more than 55" fabric. ANYONE ELSE THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM? I'll do some creative hooping as I bought all of the background fabric I chose and I don't want to waste it.

Very attractive bag. Is there a way to add a zipper closure? I like zippers at the top to keep things from falling out if bag falls over. LOL

Hi Variadee! I finished this bag quite quickly so I didn't take the time to add a zipper. I imagine you could add a zipper strip (think about the side panel of a boxed cushion) to the lining before stitching the facing down. It would make a better bag.

Great looking bag, Eileen! Thanks for the idea of the straps with a toggle through a grommet - it gave me an idea of how to finish another bag I was having trouble with!

It's just two different upholstery weight fabrics - one tan and the other taupe. Thanks for your kind comment.

What a great idea for you design. I would never of thought to use it for a purse. Clever. I am just about finished with our quilt project. On the binding video I did not see any reference to how find the binding strip is. I assume it is 2". If not please let me know. I can't wait to finish up. Then I promise I will post a picture. I have learned a lot and loving every minute of it. Thanks Eileen.

You're so welcome! I love teaching on Craftsy - great way to connect with other passionate embroiderers! On the binding, i usually cut my binding 2 1/2" wide but that's just a matter of personal preference.
