Home for Christmas

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional

What was your inspiration?

Six years ago, just before Christmas, my mother passed away. The song, "Home for Christmas", was sung at her funeral. She so dearly loved Christmas and she had waited so long to join my father that we felt she was finally home. Just in time for Christmas. The following year I made this quilt in her memory.

What are you most proud of?

I've always loved this layout. I found a picture of a floral quilt with leaves dancing up the blocks. In my quilt it's poinsettias that dance and lend movement. This was one of my very earliest experiences with free motion quilting and I think the spirals and swirls were a good choice. They were easy to learn and remain one of my favorite designs.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Log cabin quilts are so simple and so versatile. They also go together very quickly. Christmas fabrics are coming on sale right now and if you aren't too overwhelmed there is still time to stitch up a simple lap quilt or table topper.

Wow.....wonderful quilt and beautiful story. Thanks so much, was remember my own mother today as I finished a Christmas present, she would have so loved the Craftsy Community. She was my inspiration and teacher into my love of sewing. Need to look into motion quilting, not sure about that.

I think the holidays are a time when our thoughts turn more to those we love, whether with us or gone from our lives. My mother also inspired my love of sewing. You should try the free motion quilting. I didn't even think about trying it until well after I had retired. Who says you can't teach an old sewing grandma new tricks?

It's a really beautiful quilt. Thank you for sharing the story of how it came about - I found it very moving and it actually brought tears to my eyes.

Oh, thank you! So sorry about the tears. It wasn't my intent at all to make anyone sad. I miss my mother a lot, but she really is home now. She had a very hard couple of years after my dad passed away and wanted nothing more than to be with him.

You made me cry! Beautiful quilt! I know how it feels to lose a parent, making a quilt in her memory is a special way to keep her close.

Thank you so much for your nice comments, but I surely didn't intend to make anyone cry! This is really a very happy quilt for me. I love having it out where I can see it.

The quilt is stunning, yet simple, due to your choices and placement of fabric. However, the story is so very sweet. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

I have to admit I'm not much on Log Cabin quilts but THIS has made me a fan! Absolutely gorgeous. I love the way you've placed the fabrics. What a wonderful way to mark your Mom's going home. My hubby and I sang in a musical contata years ago by that name and it included a song titled "Home For Christmas" at the end. I just love it and I wonder if it was the same song. Saving this one for sure. Maybe I'll make a Log Cabin quilt after all.

Oh, thank you. When making this one I realized that the humble log cabin block can be extremely versatile. This song, "I'll Be Home for Christmas", had always been one of Mother's most favorite. During WWII when my dad was a soldier, the song had made her cry. After that it reminded her of how grateful she was that he'd come home safely.

OMG! what a talented mom I got. It is so sweet, and right away makes us feel the spirit of the season. I wish one day be able to experiment with fabrics (never would be able to accomplish such beauty), but you are really an inspiration for many of us here. Love the garlands effect. Thanks for sharing

Thank you so much. I've already dragged it out even thought it's really a bit early. This is really a beginner quilt and so very easy to make. It would be a good starting point for learning to quilt.

Awesome, it looks like boughs of green with poinsettias climbing a lattice. A very special quilt to honor your mom.

Thank you, Betsy! It's in some ways reminiscent of my mother's Christmas garlands winding up the staricase banister.
