Holly's Mittens

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Whimsical, Traditional

Materials

Novita 7 Veljesta Red yarn and some leftover 7 Veljesta Raita. 75% wool, 25% polyamide. 150G=300 meters, one skein will be plenty, 18S wide and 26 rows high is 10X10cm. I used 3.75 mm DB needles.

What was your inspiration?

One of the dermatologists I work with is a very casual busy mom of three who had mentioned that she'd like to have a cord in her mittens like her girls so they stay with her. I called her and asked for her favorite color, and fire engine red it was. Little thinking, a couple of bus rides to work and back, and Holly got her mittens. (I hope I get my little laser fluff up in return, ;-))

What are you most proud of?

I'm actually quite fond of the intarsia instead of the usual k2,p2 wrist. This way you get a nice little detail and a very well structured wrist which won't slip.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

To knit the cord, cast on 4 on DB needles (important), k4, slide the work to the beginning again (or as it really seems, the other end of your right hand needle and move it to your left hand) and knit the first stitch to the last one by pulling them into a circle, repeat until you've reached desired length. Repetitious, and kinda boring, but very pretty when done.

Nice, like the longer cuffs. Since I don't use Facebook, is it possible to obtain the pattern in another form...please?! If not, I guess I can follow the basic description in your last comment.

I think the facebook page should be available to anybody. Have you tried? I'll go and double check the settings, but you should be able to see some of my page contents as they're supposedly available to everybody.

Tnank you so much. Looks like you are a bit more experienced knitter than I am. I have knit mittens, but have to follow a pattern..I will give these a try!

There's a pattern on my FB page for the 'pompulatumput' which is essentially the same idea. I knit socks and mittens essentially without patterns, but here's the "thought process" if you can call it a pattern: https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150485862324620.

Few differences to this: I started with 48 cast on, knitted only about six rows after the garter stitch start, k2tog after every four (total of 40 left), and then three more rows, start the intarsia, and the thumb gusset starts about 2-4 rows above the intarsia. I hope this helps. Use your own hand as a guide for fit. If you'll be knitting for a child, hit me with a message, and I'll give you the dimensions you should approximate.
