I have started knitting this -- I have 880 yards of my yarn and would like to know the best way to enlarge it. I don't want to rely on blocking. Any ideas ?

I would agree, it' great for someone who is beginning to create shawls. It's lacy and looks really pretty, I have made several (which I must remember to add to my project page) . I also added beads near the edge of one of mine, the yarn was light and airy and I wanted to give it a little more weight , so that it would stay in place when I wore it. It's knitted in green, tonal sock yarn and is really soft!

After knitting some lace patterns, I decided to try this shawl. Well, everyone says it is easy, but it has been so difficult for me that I've had to put it aside out of frustration. I have started over once, ripped out 12 rows the second try and tinked several when the count seemed to be off, that it's just not fun anymore. I so wanted to do this but taking out rows of over 100 stitches is just getting old. Maybe I'm not an experienced enough knitter (5years). Beautiful pattern though :(.

Do you use marker after every pattern repeat? This is the only way to knit lace and remain sane.
Susan260 on craftsy.com
Mar 01, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
Yes! Thank you, you are right, but still not working for me. I will perhaps pick it up again, but so frustrated at this point. Remaiining sane is a good idea. :)

it is on Ravelry, and if you get on, you will love it. You can pattern search, (Holden is a free download) or keep it in your library or favorites. If you have yarn that you just had to buy, but don't have a pattern for it, search "yarn" and hit the projects. Ravelry and Knitty are great sites for patterns, lessons, and anything else a knitter needs.

Gee, now I need to learn to knit....are circular needles difficult for the absolute beginner? I crochet up a storm!!!
mizjayne on craftsy.com
Mar 31, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Circular needles are no issue, I actually use them all the time a I sew on the train & they take up less room & your needles are less likely to pull out when stored. It's the lace pattern that will take more skill. You'll want a good number of projects under your belt before you try this.
pattyg-b428 on craftsy.com
Sep 01, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Even if pattern calls for Straight needles, I still use circular needles instead. Their much easier to handle and to keep your project on with out loosing it.

Row 6 has you knitting on the wrong side, so purling that center stitch makes it match the knitted center stitch on all the other rows.

To stretch it out, I use sailing yarn and a big darning needle. I put one thread through the shawls midline (from the midpoint at the neck to the apex), one thread for each of the short edges and one through the long edge at the neck. I make a stitch at each end as when starting knitting or crocheting. I cover a mattress or floor rug with towels and stretch the wet shawl and fix the sailing-yarn with the needles. I put several needles in between the "end-needles" of each thread to help support the thread to keep straight. A metal measuringtape is a great help to see the edges are straight. Another alternative are "blocking wires", They are simple and fast to use.

Here is a video that explains the picot bind off (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nhm6n3tfHY). In the video, she uses a cable cast on to cast on the additional stitches, and I wrote in the pattern to use a knit cast on, but either method works.

This project has been flying off my needles, I am Row 12 of the lace pattern and it is looking lovely. I will need to soak/wash it before I use it though, because I took it along on a camping trip this weekend and it smells a little like campfire at this point. Using markers at all the increase points made it simple to knit without a lot of light.

Just read about your shawl smelling of wood smoke- well that was months ago, but it still made me laugh to think of you knitting by flashlight in a tent! Thank you! Julia

Just finished the bind off at work this morning. Can't wait to get home and block it. It was a fast, easy lace pattern... Just what my mommy brain needs. Thanks for the great pattern Mindy. :-)

I'm about 12 rows from the bind off. I'm afraid I may be short on yarn. My bad. Didn't double check my yardage before beginning...wanted to try it before commiting to a pricey yarn. May just end it sooner so I get to practice the picot. Love the pattern!! : )

Question about the pattern. Im not following the Lace Pattern, Im following the other instructions. Where do I go from after it says ...Repeat Rows 4 & 5 44 more times (193 sts)? Do I continue onto the charted instructions row 6?? Help, please.
MindySW on craftsy.com
Aug 15, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Once you have 193 stitches, you will work from either the chart, starting at row 1, OR work from the written instructions starting with row 1 of the written.

This is my first lace shawl. Once I got the pattern started, it was not difficult at all. I was really worried because I am using my skein that is only 420 yards, but I have reached the picot with enough to finish. Now I must conquer the picot.

Picot is pretty easy, just time-consuming. I put on a movie to have as company when I do a picot bind off.

I am spending a lot of time making baby things for my grandson due in Dec. but I can't resist this. I have some lovely silky bamboo yarn that will be stunning in this! Can't wait to get started. I have an inch more to do on a baby hat then I am going to start. Love the beginning method. It looks good and I think it will be a nicer edge than some of the shawls I've done.

I can't wait any longer... until I find the yarn I want, I'm going to 'practice' on a cheaper Patons Lace yarn, at least the colours are pretty called Sachet, in purple/mauve/green. Wish me luck, this is my first lace, shawl, anything 'fancy'.

This is beautiful, but is hard to believe the difficulty level is so low. I do have trouble keeping track of pattern designs probably because knitting is my 'take along' project which means since i sit waiting in so many doctors offices there are a lot of distractions and often have to just stop when called in to see the doctor....
