Instructions

Very much inspired by the Jim Hjelm design (Style JH8904), I used Kwik Sew pattern #3516 for the bottom layer & Kwik Sew pattern #3401 as the outer layer (made from the all-over lace). Basically, I 'morphed' the 2 patterns together to try to create the design that my daughter desired.

My daughter desired the dress design by Jim Hjelm (Style JH8904).

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of how it fit my daughter & how she felt in it as a bride.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This dress is beautiful! I'm going to try something similar for my daughter and would love your advice! Since you changed the back of the under dress to go down to a vee, it doesn't seem like it would "stay up" on its own. Does the lace over dress provide the stability to keep it up? Also, how did you finish the neck and armhole edges of the lace --since I believe the actual pattern is lined?

I am getting married in September and this dress has been a great inspiration! Just wondering where the groomsmen got their vest and pants. We are looking to do something similar because we're getting married on Labor Day Weekend, which tends to be pretty hot here in VA.

Hi! I found your dress on Pinterest and knew it was "the one" lol. I bought the two patterns you used and I am making a trial run dress to make sure it will fit. I have two questions for you- did you make any alterations to the patterns? (for example- the lace overlay has many pleats in the back- did you omit them?) and how did you attach the lace in the back? Is it attached to the zipper on the satin underlining or is it separate? Thanks for any help and congratulations on making such a stunning gown!

My daughter would like for me to make your beautiful dress for her wedding next summer. How, where did you attach the two dresses together or are they worn separately one on top of the other? I think I should buy a dress form as my daughter lives too far for many fittings.

I am getting married within the next year and a half and have had my eye on the Jim Helm (Style JH8904) dress since I began looking for gowns. It is absolutely beautiful, and your rendition is stunning. Would I be able to take your patterns to a seamstress and have her make the same dress based off of the patterns above? How much do you think this would cost?

I would think she could but that would depend on her I suppose. :) I will admit it was a challenge & I have been sewing for over 30 years. I'm not sure about the cost. That might depend on how she charges & what area of the country you live in (cost of living). With materials, this cost me under $200, but that was with getting stuff on sale & the all over lace was purchased on eBay for a really good price. :) I'm sorry I can't give you more specifics. & I didn't log my time spent. & I of course did not charge my daughter. ;)

I have to agree with the posts here. This gown is absolutely beautiful, well constructed and wonderfully fitted. The attention to detail is evident. I have a daughter getting married next year and she is also wearing lace but alas I am not making the dress. The stress level would have been too high! LOL. Absolutely wonderful job, thank you so much for entering and sharing this special event and excellent craftsmanship. Reminds why I love to sew.

Unfortunately for me, the contest rules were that whoever had the most 'hearts' was the Grand Prize winner. All the rallying of friends, friends of friends, & family on FaceBook, etc. did not garner me more votes than the winner. :(

Even as a late entry into the contest myself, I too think that out of the other dresses, this dress should have been the winner hands down, but alas, as the contest rules stated, the one with the most hearts wins the prize. Everyday I would notice the climb in votes for the runner up, it was astounding. I to, tried rallying friends and family via facebook and email, but was unsuccessful in catching up in votes. Some people were put off by thinking they had to registrar a membership to craftsy, but for those who asked how to vote, did log in with facebook. I too agree that this is a beautiful dress and know the design that you were going for as my daughter also looked at other Hjelm designs. I also appreciate the time and hard work it is to research and decide on commercial patterns that will give the look that we want.

In a contest, there are winners and losers. Regardless of who wins, someone will be upset that another person didn't win. The judges followed the rules set by the contest, and the winner got the most hearts. What really matters most is that the bride and her mother were happy with the design.

And so much prettier than the average ill-fitting, boobs falling out strapless dress everyone seems to choose. They think it's unique because the bottoms are different but the tops are all the same and especially bigger girls need more support and some arm coverage. They could learn a lot about flattering a figure from you and a proper fit. BTW, I am by no means implying that she needs arm coverage. Just bemoaning the lack of uniqueness in the industry even when the figure demands another style for fit.
