Acrylic or any other washable yarn such as wool, cotton, etc. Silky slippery yarns are NOT practical for this project
What was your inspiration?
This was a hat my mom made for me time after time, taking it apart and adding more yarn and remaking it as i grew. I have changed the pattern a little and made many for my and other children.
Every time i make a new one i think of my own childhood.
What are you most proud of?
Just by adding one small step to a very popular "pull over the head" hat this HELMET hat with its "cape" completely eliminates a need for a scarf. This hat protects the child's neck and always stays neatly in place. A snow suit or a jacket fits comfortably over the hat as its "cape" reaches to the shoulder adding extra warmth where needed but not interfering with other clothes.
As for the colors; moms and dads, pay attention - bright colors make it SO MUCH simpler keeping those little ones in sight! Yes, neon colors all the way! With these colors you don't even have to make an effort finding your kid's hat among the sea of others on a playground. It pops! Well tested by me :)
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Never make anything for children that is scratchy, slippery, tight or too difficult to put on or take off. NEVER!
Because your child will refuse to wear it and he / she will always win this battle.
