Carry the not used color loosely with you otherwise your knitting will become too tight.There are some good youtube tutorials on fair isle knitting.
Cross not used yarn when going over more than 3 to 4 stitches at alternating positions in every row.
So you get short strands in which nobody gets entagled and the strands will not show through.
