I spun this yarn from hemp top purchased from Opulent Fibers. The colors were so rich and deep that I was afraid it would bleed but even though I wet spun the fiber there was barely a blush of color on my hands with 2 of the colors. The others left no color. I was impressed!
What was your inspiration?
I have been spinning a lot of flax but it has all been natural colored. When I saw the vibrant colors of the available top in the Opulent booth at our spinner's conference, I had to give it a try. This was easy to spin and I don't know if I will knit or weave with it yet. (just want to look at it for now!)
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
This fiber can be either wet or dry spun but if dry spun, it will be a little bit fuzzy and hairy. Wetting your fingers and the singles just after drafting gives a much smoother yarn. It sticks down the loose bits and the plying holds them in. I used a whorl ratio of 11:1 on the wheel.
