Materials

Hutchenreuther German porcelain blank. Porcelain paints. Evenheat electric kiln.

What was your inspiration?

All of my hand painted porcelain is reminiscent of the Victorian era realistic painting found on porcelain and glass lamps in antique shops today. I am always inspired by the beauty of nature and the flora found within.

What are you most proud of?

I am partial to painting roses, and my painting reflects the attention to detail and the natural fragility of the lovely rose.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Find a good teacher in your area to get the proper instruction for mixing and using porcelain and glass paints. The painting I do is NOT the type promoted by craft stores. The paints I used are powdered mineral based paints mixed with an oil medium for application. After they are applied the painted object has to be fired to a temperature of 1125F degrees. It is not an art form for the faint of heart, and it takes great patience and willingness to learn the proper painting techniques.

Dotty, I prefer pastels and soft lines...very peaceful and exquisite.

Gorgeous! I'm a porcelain painter as well, but I'm leagues behind you. I have a blank bowl like yours. I've seen many of these painted, but yours I like best. It's elegant simplicity! (but way NOT simple to do!)

Thank you very much. Some painters use lots of gold on this blank. But, I prefer to let the embossing on th blank act as a 'frame' for the painting in the center. And you're right, I've been at it for nearly 40 years.
