Materials

2" masking tape and quart cans of outdoor deck "paint stain" in four colors: redwood, Chesapeak blue, ebony, and white. Also used disposable 2" paint brushes. Corner stencils, and a small amount of leftover regular, exterior white paint.

What was your inspiration?

I've seen other versions, and since my deck needed staining, I thought a faux rug would add year-round color and interest to a plain deck.

What are you most proud of?

That the paint stain still allows the grain of the natural wood to come through. The video (link included) shows step-by-step how to do this one.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you get tiny runs under the masking tape, they can be softened with paint thinner and a paper towel when wet, or even lightly sanded with an emery board when dry. For the corner detail, I used a small amount of exterior white paint (because the white paint stain would have been too transparent). Also, for a rug this size, quart cans were more than I needed, pints would have been enough. You can use any colors you like.
