Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Traditional, Cute, Classic, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Quilting weight cotton, batting, sewing machine

What was your inspiration?

My nephew was going to have his first child, a boy! What better baby quilt to make for a baby boy with the last name of Holland then this "H" block quilt.

What are you most proud of?

I like the graphic quality of the "H" block. Even if you do not create this for the letter "H" initial, it has a nice, modern look to it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a very easy block to assemble. Great stash buster or fat quarter project!

I absolutely love this pattern. I just finished this quilt for a new baby boy that is coming in our family. I really loved your fabrics too. I actually wanted to send you a shot of mine, but could not find an email address on your site, just a form. Thanks for sharing!

Do you think it would work to be an "I"...that isn't an "L"....or would I need to make the blocks narrower?
Sharon Holland on craftsy.com
Nov 14, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I think if you woul like to make an "I", then try making the center stem of the "I" twice as long to really look more like an "I". This block could also be turned into an "C" or "J" or "L" or an " O" or "T" or "U" very easily. Let's see, did I leave any out? If you added some triangles, then other letters could be made, but right now, the pattern is using just squares and rectangles for easy piecing.
Sharon Holland on craftsy.com
Nov 14, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I just re-read my comment below on an "I" block, I forgot to say that by making the center stem longer, it will change the size of the block and it will now be a rectangle, yardage will change a bit and dimensions. So figure that all up before staring if you went that way. Or, maybe a simple "I" without the serifs (cross bars) will have to work if you do not want to change the size of the block.
