This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Plus-Size Pattern Fitting & Design »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Plus-sized

Style: Funky

Materials

Paper tape and old T-shirt.

What was your inspiration?

This is the paper tape dress form that my late husband made of me, oh, it could be almost 20 years ago. It lives in my garage and has not been affected by the heat and humidity. The stomach has collapsed so is shoved a shoe box up inside and that has popped it back in place.

What are you most proud of?

My measurements are still about the same, and I've used this form all these years. I have it popped over the top of my industrial dress form.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Try to wet only the glue side of the tape with a wet sponge, so it takes relatively less drying time.

I have no one to help me tape up. Is it possible to do it yourself? I suppose not.

yes it can be done by your self. just lay the shirt out and tape the back firstthen you can add more tape and tighten it up to fit snug,

I had no idea I was getting so much by investing in your class, Plus Sized Sewing and Design! You are a very easy to follow teacher AND we learn (and see!) how to make a dress form of ourselves! Yea! That should be in the class description, for sure! I have been trying to get someone to help me make one of these for years ... and now when I do I have a how to do it video to show. Thanks

Barbara - I 've just finished watching your whole class while waiting for my pattern . It was exceptional ! I know you have said there is no such thing as a"sloping " waist-- but when my paper tape body form is done I will show you I must be the only one who does have that sloping waist . I have had multiple problems getting anything to fit me nicely and am holding out hope that your methods will work !

I didn't say that it doesn't exist! I said that it can form after years of wearing ill-fitting undergarments and pants. I used the expression "belly dent line." I also said that hanging your waistbands much lower in front than in back makes hems hang unevenly. So try wearing your waistline as close to level in front as in back if you can, and be sure to get undergarments that are long enough in crotch length for you to do this. Think of this issue as a goal!

No! The paper tape dress form comes in any size that YOU are. It exactly reproduces your own size, shape, and postsuure. I teach how to make on in my class "Plus Size Pattern Fitting and Design." In the class lesson on dress forms, I explain that standardized dress forms do not look or measure like real people, and I explain how to fix that problem.

My husband said he would do the wrapping this weekend. I am holding him to it.

Was just looking to buy one (used), but this looks like a much better option! I'm looking forward to taking your class and learning how to make my own. Now, if I could just find a giant balloon, to make it "inflatable", so I could store it more compactly! :)

The only type I have tested is the wetable paper tape. It forms a type of paper mache, and the tape you are referring to might not work.

Do we learn how to make a dressform in this class? Forgive me if this question shows up several times as I was not able to KNOW if I ever really posted for any of my tries.

This dress form looks really good for being 20 years old. I made one out of duct tape about 3 or 4 years ago. but have never used it. I am hoping I am close to the same size so I won't need to make another one. My daughter took 4 hours to duck tape me. She was complaining about getting dizzy.

Thanks for the headsup on the timeline! I saw your post about 'no potty breaks', but didn't realize 4 hours would need to be invested. That's good to know, as I'm the type to always assume everything takes 20 minutes :)
