What was your inspiration?
The criss crossed banding of Grecian togas....plus an alluring mixture of cables and lace.
What are you most proud of?
The construction to get the patterning to turn out correctly. I prefer to knit socks toe up, but this proved impractical given the stitch pattern. It took two pairs (and resulted in 4 slightly different socks) to get it nailed down, but they turned out just like I'd hoped.
Also, even though these look like traditional cables paired with lace, they're really simple twist stitches - which means you don't need a cable needle, and the stitch pattern is actually simpler to work than you'd think.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
There is a lot going on with these socks - go slowly until you get in rhythm. Use stitch markers to separate the instep from the gusset and sole stitches - the flows better if you treat these areas separately since they all have different stitch patterns.
